Caleb’s First Solid Food

Caleb tasting rice cereal

Caleb had his first taste of solid food today. If you want the short version, I think he liked it. For more details, read on. It was some very liquidy rice cereal. We tried it just after he had woken up from a nap and hadn’t eaten for about 3 hours. I hoped he would be hungry enough but not too hungry and in a good mood, not too tired. But maybe it was too soon after waking up and maybe he wasn’t really ready to wake up yet. Because he was kinda fussy and seemed like he might still be tired. However his fussy crying was about the only way he was opening his mouth and when I put the food in, he seemed to like it. He was kinda pushing his tongue out and sucking his lips tasting the cereal. Of course a good amount dribbled down his chin onto the bib. It was kinda funny watching him work his mouth and tongue and lips with the cereal in there. It seemed like he was exploring what this stuff was and he did seem to like it. He didn’t get the concept of opening his mouth to get more though. I had to really coax him to open up or put the spoon in when he started to cry again but once it got there he seemed glad to slurp and suck at the cereal and spoon. Overall, I consider it a successful first solid meal. We’ll have some more tomorrow.

Mom’s 30th birthday

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Yesterday was my 30th birthday and I was quite happily expecting to get to go out shopping alone for a couple hours and probably get a little gift and maybe a cake from Sam & the boys. Well, all that was great, plus I got so much more. Sam pulled off quite a surprise party for me. I got back from shopping a little earlier than expected so I didn’t get the traditional big shouted “Surprise!” from a housefull of people, but I was surprised nonetheless by the people that kept showing up at our house. We just hung around the house visiting and watching the kids play. Of course we had some birthday cake too. It was a great day. Since I am the one who takes most of our pictures, most of them are of the kids and none are of me. Sam did video everyone singing “Happy Birthday” and me blowing out the candles on my cake at least. Anyway, here are a couple pictures of the kids at my party.

Comparing brothers

Here’s Micah & Caleb at 4 months old on the couch.  I just wanted to see how alike or different they looked since so many people seem to think Caleb looks like Micah.  They’re both big, but Micah looks chubbier even though Caleb actually is bigger and heavier than Micah was at the same age.  Caleb definitely has lighter hair and skin than Micah.  I think they look pretty different actually, when you put the pictures right next to each other.  (You can click on any of the pictures to see a larger version.)  What do you think?  They look the most alike when sleeping.  These are at 3 months old:

Here are the boys in their matching shirts. They actually have about 3 matching shirts. Micah is hard to take pictures of these days. He doesn’t like having his picture taken lately and if he sees the camera will say “no pictures!” It’s usually OK for me to take pictures of Caleb though so that is how I got this one. Micah thought I was just taking Caleb’s picture.

jumper big smile Caleb head up on elbows Caleb got Micah's car

Caleb is getting so big.  At his 4 month doctor appointment he weighed 22lbs 4oz and was 27 1/2 inches long.  We put the new carseat in the car last weekend.  Now Caleb is using Micah’s old carseat and Micah is using the new one we just bought.  Caleb can hold his head up pretty high while on his stomach now.  We got out the Johnny Jump Up and tried it out.  He likes being upright but hasn’t really started jumping in it yet.  He better figure it out quick because the weight limit for it is only about 25lbs.  We couldn’t have started using it too much earlier though because he has to be able to hold his head up well.  He ias also getting good at grabbing things and getting them to his mouth.  I set him on the couch one day thinking Micah’s cars were far enough away, but at least one was apparantly within his reach because when I turned around a minute later he had it in his mouth as you can see in the picture.  Just today he started lifting his legs up far enough to grab his foot.  He is not rolling over yet; the doctor says he will likely take a little longer than average to do that because he is so big.  People often comment on how much he looks like Micah.  Caleb smiles and laughs and babbles a lot now.  He even sounds like he’s saying real words sometimes like “Hi”, “Hey”, and “Ma”.  He also yawns loudly; it makes us laugh.  I wish we could get one of his loud yawns on video, but they’re too unpredictable.  We’ll just have to hope to catch one while we’re videotaping something else he’s doing.  He will be starting to eat solid foods soon.  The Dr. says he can start rice ceral any time.  We just have been waiting for a good time when both Mom & Dad are home so one can feed and one can video and/or take pictures and when Caleb is hungry but not too hungry and not too tired to try his first solid food.
