Big Summer Trip

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Well, tomorrow we leave on our big trip to South Carolina. It should be a lot of fun. Dad’s also looking forward to playing with his new toy — the iPhone. I’m actually writing this post from the web browser built into it. The typing is still a bit slow, but overall it’s pretty sweet.

Update: well we made it here finally after a couple of hours of delays on the Delta flight (thanks to the slow customs holding our crew back and a clogged/overflowing lavatory they didn’t bother to discover during the first delay). After just squeaking in with the rental car co. at midnight EDT, the drive from ATL to Easley went very well and Christy’s family was graciously up to meet us at 3:00AM. The boys are all settled in bed now; actually it’s just me tapping away in the dark on the iPhone at this point. I take the fact that there are two open wireless access points available from here as the best sign of the trip so far.
Well I guess that’s it for now.

Micah’s Soccer Medal

Micah with soccer medal close

Micah finished his six-week soccer class today and got a medal. He did great this last time; participated in everything the whole time. He played goalie for a little while during their little game and made a great save. Eventually they had all the kids with their own balls kicking them down the field and trying to make goals against the coaches or parents in the goals. Micah scored several goals. He was really proud of his medal. It was cute to see him go up and have the coach put it on him and then stop and examine it and then turn around and show it off proudly. After the big team cheer, I had Micah show it off again for me for this picture.

On a side note, Caleb really wanted to get in there and run and play soccer too. Before they really got started, he was running and kicking Micah’s ball along really well. I was impressed. He ran out onto the field during their game a few times too and I had to run and grab him which he didn’t especially like.

Caleb’s First Haircut

Caleb had his very first haircut on Wednesday, June, 13, 2007. He is 17 months old. I set him up in front of the TV, put in a Boz the Bear DVD, and cut his hair with the clippers. He did great. He did fuss and wiggle some, but not too bad. I was done in less than 20 minutes. Love those clippers; they are so easy and fast. The only problem with them is they are kinda loud which is a bit scary. I just put a #5 attachment on and buzzed all over Caleb’s head. It worked great and now he looks like a real big little boy; so cute. PS His bit lip seems to be healing pretty well; it’s been a week now.

Caleb’s bit lip fussy

Originally uploaded by Christy Y

Well, Mom had a little bit of a scare this evening. I was just outside the back door feeding Cisco when I heard screaming and crying coming from inside. As I went in to find the source I called out “What’s wrong?” Micah told me Caleb got sick but when I got to him I found him sitting up on the family room floor bleeding from his mouth. It scared me pretty bad for a second. I grabbed him up and snatched an ice pack from the freezer and a clean kitchen towel and put it to his mouth to stop the bleeding. Once I dabbed it a bit I saw that it was his lip that was cut and realized it was probably not too serious. He didn’t like the towel & ice pack pressed on his lip, but preferred to suck his thumb. The lip wasn’t bleeding much anymore, so I just held him & let him suck his thumb for a few minutes and he calmed down real fast. All of that was probably less than 5 minutes. I did call the doctor just to check and after asking me where the cut was and how big it was and whether it was still bleeding, he said he would just leave it alone (I.e. it doesn’t need stitches) and it would probably heal pretty fast. I actually took this picture after he had eaten dinner and gotten cleaned up. At this point he seemed to be fussing at the camera being so close to him and me not letting him reach for it, not his lip bothering him. He doesn’t seemed bothered by it at all anymore. I just hope it heals quickly and cleanly; it looks like it could leave a scar to me but maybe since he’s so young it won’t.

Caleb loves swim class

Caleb loves swim class

Here’s Caleb and Mom at the Baby & Me swim class at Daland Swim School. Caleb loves the water. He often points and wans to go swim when we are there for Micah’s swim lessons too. In Caleb’s swim class we start by getting their faces wet by pouring water from a mini watering can over their heads. Then we get their ears wet by holding them sideways with one ear in the water and swirling around in a circle. Then we go the other way and get the other ear wet. This is Caleb’s favorite part; he likes the spinning. Then we practice back floats. Caleb’s teacher said he did the best back float she had ever seen. He is so relaxed and usually still sucking his thumb. Then we play catch with some balls for a little bit. Then it’s time to go under the water. Caleb doesn’t mind. After that we get to play with rubber duckies while we practice climbing out at the wall and “jumping” (from sitting onthe edge) back in. If there’s still time they get to stand and walk on a giant foam fish to practice balance and then jump in to their parent again. Finally we say a big goodbye to all our swim buddies.

Micah has been taking a soccer class once a week the past few weeks through the park district. He has started out kinda slow; the first 3 weeks he spent a good chunk of the time playing in the sand volleyball court instead of doing the soccer drills and games with the other kids. Maybe I should have tried to get a friend of his to take the class with him. But this last time he went in and did everything with the class. They have been learning to be a goalie (grab the ball & roll away with it), kick goals (follow the ball and keep kicking it till it goes in the goal), and pull the ball back with their foot and then turn around with it. They’re learning to stay inside the soccer field and that they have to stop if the ball goes out. They play games every week after practicing a few drills. He says he likes it so that is good.
