Today Micah said the sweetest thing to me! We were driving home from Gramma’s Place play place and had picked up lunch on the way home, when seemingly out of the blue Micah said, “Mom, thanks for being such a good mom.” I told him thanks for telling me and that it made me really happy to hear him say that. Then, because I was wondering what was going on in his head that prompted him to say that I asked him why he said that. He said “Because I love you”. I asked what I did that made him think I was a good mom and he said maybe because I took him to the play place. I told him thanks again and how happy and good I felt that he said I was a good mom. What a sweetie! I just had to write this down so I won’t forget.

“Thanks, Mom”
Friday, August 24th, 2007Caleb’s Circles
Friday, August 24th, 2007Here is a recent piece of Caleb’s artwork. He does like to color, but usually tires of it rather quickly after making only a few light lines on the paper. This time he used several colors and made some dark lines and big circles and filled up the paper. It’s my favorite of his so far. This was done August 13, 2007 at age 19 months.
Santa Ana Zoo
Friday, August 24th, 2007We went down to the Santa Ana Zoo last weekend to meet up with Christy’s oldest friend and her family. Rachel & Christy have been friends since we went to preschool together. The zoo was a perfect size to see it all in a couple hours with little kids then head out for lunch and naps in the car on the way home. Here are Micah & Caleb with Rachel’s kids Emily and A.J. looking at a scarlet ibis on the rock and fish and turtles in the water in the aviary. We also watched a little show about some animals and the kids got to pet a king snake, a skink lizard, a duck, and a fluffy rooster if they wanted. I think Micah touched all of them and Caleb petted the rooster and duck. It was a fun day visiting with friends and we hope it will not be so long between visits the next time we see them.
Skitters
Friday, August 24th, 2007I just had to get these cool ride-on toys for Micah and Caleb when we saw them at the Simi Town Center last week. They tried them out there and seemed to really like them so I got two. You are supposed to put your feet up on them and turn the handle/steering wheel from side to side to go. They can go backward too. I even rode one a bit and it is pretty fun. I guess it also improves balance and coordination, but mostly it’s fun. I remember having things that worked the same way when I was in kindergarten although they looked a bit different. Sam remembers similar things from when he was little too. So I just thought these were really cool.
Beach Day
Friday, August 24th, 2007A couple weeks ago we went to Carpinteria State Beach for the morning. It was Caleb’s first time ever at the beach and Micah’s first time that he remembers. (Micah has been to the beach in Hawaii when he was about 8 months old). They preferred the sand to the water, maybe because the water was rather cold. We barely touched the water. We mostly stayed up on the dry sand under our umbrella and baby shade. Caleb fell asleep and had a nap in the baby shade tent. Micah enjoyed laying in the sand in the sun and playing. He ended up with sand all over his face and also learned that it is not fun to get sand in your eyes. Both boys slept most of the way home.
Ventura County Fair
Monday, August 20th, 2007We went to the Ventura County Fair on August 8, Dollar Day. We got there right when it opened at 11AM and headed straight for the farm animals first. We saw cute piglets, some chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs, sheep, lambs, and cows. One young handler names Kailie let us come inside her cow’s pen to pet and feed her. She was a heifer named Sweetheart. She was really big! But she really was a Sweetheart and just lay there while we pet her. Micah fed her some hay. Caleb mostly just looked.
After looking at all the animals we went looking for a table and some lunch. We listened to a singer on one of the stages while we ate.
Next we went into the youth expo building. We played with the cool wooden toys for a while, and then went and watched people making giant bubbles. I’m always amazed at the art and crafts and baking done by kids.
Then on the way out we stopped at the Children’s Dell where there are some smaller rides for kids. Micah got to choose one ride and he picked the giant slide. So we got a small book of ride tickets and he got to go down the slide twice; once with Dad and then again with Mom.
Then it was time to head home for naps. They boys fell asleep in the car. It was a fun day.
Grandpa Don’s Harley
Saturday, August 18th, 2007Grandpa Don & Grandma Holly rode up on their Harley to visit a couple weeks ago. Micah was finally brave enough to get close to the motorcycle and even sit on it. When Grandpa first got it and rode it up to show us, Micah was afraid to get near it. So here are Micah & Caleb sitting on Grandpa’s motorcycle and asking and learning about every single part of it. The questioning and exploring continued until Caleb stuck his hand in the exhaust pipe and had to come in and wash up. By the way, Caleb does a great motorcycle sound effect: BBrrummm!
Family BBQ
Saturday, August 18th, 2007I’m trying to catch up here on stuff we’ve done in the past month since my last post. We had a great BBQ at a park in Santa Maria with Sam’s parents and cousin Kaite and her husband Buddy and son Rocko. We played in the sand, played with cars, played with Play-Doh, flew a kite, played catch and all kinds of fun stuff. Then we BBQed burgers and hot dogs for dinner before heading back home. Here are a few pictures from the day. One is a great smile from Rocko while he’s playing cars. Then Micah & Dad flying the kite. Caleb watching and pointing at the kite and in the midst of a big kick of the beach ball. Caleb & Rocko playing with cars. Micah and Caleb ready to eat dinner.
