Yates in Hetch Hetchy

Originally uploaded by Christy Y

We spent last weekend in Yosemite for the annual Loberg Fall Climb. It was a long drive, especially since we were staying closer to the north side of the park, but wow, was it a beautiful hike. The boys actually did great on the drive. We stayed at the Evergreen Lodge which was very comfortable and had lots of cool activities on-site. We would definitely stay there again. We hiked across the O’Shaughnessy Dam and along the north side of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Such beautiful views all around. The boys were excited to go hiking. Caleb walked a good part of it, although Sam carried him the the backpack carrier on the rockier parts of the trail. We only went about a mile and found this great spot with lots of flat rocks to stop for lunch. Then we went back the way we came to the car and back to the lodge for naps. It was a fun trip.

On a side note: Micah’s activity in his Cubbies book for the week was to take a walk and find 10 things God made. How cool for Micah to get to do that activity in Yosemite!

boys smiling on big rock

It seems so rare to actually get a good picture of both Micah & Caleb looking at the camera and smiling so I was very pleased with this shot. We took it at Santa Susana Park. We were kinda scouting it out for a church picnic coming up. One unique feature of this park is the big rocks great for climbing around on. Micah climbed up on this one and was sitting perfectly so I sat Caleb up next to him and took a couple quick pictures. It’s a fun park; in fact we went back again the next day. Micah said he wanted to have his birthday party there; although you never know what kind of weather we may have in January so I’m not sure about that. Anyway, I’m sure we will go back to play at that park again; and also try to visit the train museum next door when it’s open on the weekend.

Caleb’s first swim lesson

Originally uploaded by Christy Y

Caleb had his first private swim lesson on Oct. 1. Micah has been taking lessons this year since April and the last couple months or so Caleb has been saying “go swimming!” whenever we watch Micah’s lesson. Caleb has loved swimming with Mommy at Summer Splash days all summer and in the baby & me class at the swim school, so I figured he was ready for lessons. It was his first time swimming with someone other than Mom or Dad though. I wasn’t sure how he would do but I thought he would be OK. He seems more adventurous than Micah was at his age.

Well, Caleb did great. He did seem a little confused and cautious when I was taking his shirt and shoes off and leading him to his swim teacher. But once he got in, he was fine. He didn’t cry at all or anything. We do lessons at Daland Swim School in Thousand Oaks and love it there. Caleb’s teacher is Jodi. She went slow with him, just holding him and walking across the pool. They played with rubber duckies and other water toys a bit. She put some flippers on his feet and started getting him to “run” in the water which helps him push up from under water. He went under the water several times. He even jumped into the pool from sitting on the edge.

His second lesson the next week went great too. Jodi said the second lesson is usually the hardest, so it seems like he is doing great. Caleb loves swimming!
