Halloween 2008

November 3rd, 2008

We went on a little outing to the local farm and pumpkin patch a couple weeks ago to pick out our Halloween pumpkins. This has become a tradition as this is the third year we have gone there. Every year they have this grow chart sign and we have taken a picture by it every year. It will be fun to put all the “How tall this Fall” pictures together in a few years to see how Micah & Caleb have grown.

It was warmer than we expected that day so we went to the open pumpkin patch first. The boys each picked out a small pumpkin for their own. They both chose ones with no stem this year, although they liked noticing the different kinds of stems, especially the twisted ones. Then we went to pick a big pumpkin for our Jack-o-lantern. After loading our pumpkins in our wagon, we went over to see the farm animals. They have pigs, horses, ducks, cows, alpacas, sheep, donkeys, rabbits, goats, a peacock, and other birds. We fed some of them with food pellets we bought there. We brought our own lunch so we had a picnic there too. Then the boys played in the playground area for a while before we headed home for nap time.

The day before Halloween we carved our pumpkin. Micah & Caleb didn’t want to help clean out the gooey stringy stuff inside. They just watched mom do it. We toasted the pumpkin seeds to have as a snack when we were done carving. We actually didn’t carve a face in our Jack-o-lantern. We had this kit with colored pegs, a little wooden hammer, and a battery-operated light. It kinda makes the pumpkin into something like a “Light-Bright” toy. We used the pattern to make a spider and marked the spots where the pegs should go. Then we hammered the pegs in, following the pattern. When we were done, we had a colorful spider on our Jack-o-lantern. The boys loved putting the light in it and taking it to a dark room to look at it glow. They love stuff that glows or lights up in the dark these days.

For Halloween our church has a Harvest Fest carnival and they usually have a theme too. This year the theme was sports, so Caleb wanted to be a Chargers football player and Micah chose to be a Padres baseball player. They were easy costumes because we already had a Chargers jersey (which Caleb would probably wear every day if I let him) and Micah just wore his T-ball uniform from this spring. In the morning we went to a little Halloween party at a friends house. Everyone brought yummy treats and there were fun games & activities for the kids like coloring mini pumpkins with markers, decorating Halloween cookies, a Jack-o-lantern beanbag toss, pumpkin bowling (using a little pumpkin as the ball), and funny fishing. The kids loved the fishing game best because they got candy. They even had pony rides. Micah & Caleb didn’t want to ride the pony though.

In the evening we went to the Harvest Fest. I think the boys liked jumping in the bouncy houses the best. They spent probably an hour doing that. Then we went and got hot dogs at the food court for dinner and had a piece of candy for dessert. Then we went back to play a couple more games (bean bag toss, ring toss, and ball toss) before heading home to get ready for bed. Micah also enjoyed handing out candy to a few trick-or-treaters that came to our house after we got back home. He was great at it; greeting the kids, passing out candy, and commenting on their costumes or accessories. Very cute.

We had a fun Halloween.

Disney World

October 17th, 2008

Time to catch up. We had a great vacation in Orlando last month. We stayed at the Cypress Pointe Grand Villas Resort for a week using our timeshare points. It is quite close to Disney World. We had a 3 bedroom suite which we shared with Sam’s parents and his brother Charlie, Charlie’s wife Vanessa, and their 14-month-old son Diego. Charlie, Vanessa, & Diego live in Belgium right now so this was the first time we had seen them in almost 2 years and the first time we met our nephew Diego. It was great spending the week with them.

We arrived Saturday and got settled into our resort. Sunday morning our family foursome went to church with Christy’s cousins who live near Orlando and went out the lunch with them. We had a great visit even though it was short. We were glad to get to see them though since we were there.
We also celebrated Charlie’s birthday Sunday with presents and cheesecake.

We all got 5-day passes to Disney World to go to one park per day. We did the Magic Kingdom on Monday. We saw the Bear Country Jamboree (in memory of the one at Disneyland that we always liked) and the Tiki Room Under New Management (with Iago and Zazu and new songs), rode the Magic Carpets of Aladdin and Pirates of the Caribbean and then had lunch. It was neat to see things there that Disneyland doesn’t have and to compare differences in the attractions at both. After lunch we headed to Fantasyland and hit It’s a Small World, the Carousel, and Pooh’s Playful Spot, and took an afternoon ice cream break. Then we headed over to Tomorrowland for the Indy Speedway, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Carousel of Progress, and Tomorrowland Transit Authority. When we came out of Buzz’s ride it was raining pretty good so we tried waiting it out with the Carousel of Progress and Transit Authority. But it was still raining after those so we decided to head back to our “green building” (as Caleb liked to refer to it) at the resort.

Tuesday we went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We got Fastpasses for Toy Story Mania then went for a Journey Into Narnia. Then we saw the Playhouse Disney Live on Stage show and Caleb got to meet June from Little Einsteins and take a picture with her. Caleb is really into meeting the characters. We ate lunch on Sunset Blvd, stopped to watch a demo by the Toy Story army men, then headed into the Movie Set Adventure play area for a few minutes before heading back to Toy Story Mania to use our Faspasses. Toy Story Mania was so fun! We wished we could do it again, but we really needed to head back and let the kids take naps. One thing I was really disappointed about was that we never found the Cars characters to meet and take pictures. The boys would have loved that and I think that is the only place to meet the Cars characters. After naps the boys went swimming with Grandma & Grandpa and Mom & Dad went out for the evening. We ate at Planet Hollywood and did some shopping in Downtown Disney.

Wednesday we didn’t get going as early and decided to go to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It made for a pretty short time at that park, but still fun. We took the train ride over to the petting zoo and then took the train back again. Then we went on the African safari ride and saw tons of real animals. We thought it was an even better view of the animals than at the Wild Animal Park in San Diego. We saw rhinos, hippos, antelope, giraffes, elephants, an ostrich, lions, crocodiles, flamingoes, a monkey, and more. We ate lunch at the Rainforest Cafe before heading home (the green building again) for naps. Caleb thought the thunder in the Rainforest Cafe was too loud and scary, but we all liked looking at all the fish in the many tanks. In the afternoon Grandma, Grandpa, Caleb, & Mommy went swimming in the volcano pool. Caleb loved going down the tunnel slides into the pool going under the waterfall in the pool.

Thursday we went to Epcot. We went on the Spaceship Earth ride up inside the giant ball, then split up for a half hour or so. Grandma & Grandpa went to Soarin’, Charlie & Vanessa & Diego got some breakfast, and the four of us went to the Epcot Character Greeting spot. We waited in line for about 20 minutes then got to meet, get autographs, and take pictures with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, Chip and Dale, Belle, and Baloo. We generally don’t like to wait in lines for characters, but getting to see so many in a row made it worth it. Then we met back up and Grandma & Grandpa took the kids while the four parents went on Soarin’. After that we all went on the Nemo clamshell ride and spent a while looking at the fish in the tanks there. We walked around the World Showcase looking for a good lunch spot and ended up eating in “Mexico” all the way at the end. Micah loved the scaled down train set next to “Germany”. After a rest we played mini golf at our resort and went swimming in the volcano pool again.

Friday we went to Magic Kingdom again for our last day of Disney World. We tried a different schedule today and went to a mall in the morning to walk around and wear out Micah & Caleb so they could take early naps then go to the park after that. It worked out pretty well. We got to the park just in time to see the Dreams Come True parade which the kids liked because they got to see lots of characters go by. It was so cute to see Diego clapping for the parade. We went on the Jungle Cruise, the Carousel again, Mickey’s PhilharMagic show, Dumbo, The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Farm, the Disney World Railroad, and ate dinner on Main Street just before closing time.

Saturday morning after we packed up and checked out we spent a few hours at Downtown Disney before we had to go to the airport. We played with Legos at the Lego store, rode a little train ride, browsed the Disney Toy store, and had lunch at McDonald’s before going to the movies to see Wall-E. Then we had to go to the airport to fly home. We had a wonderful week.

Here’s all of us in our resort suite’s living room.

Disneyland Again

September 12th, 2008

boys smiling with Mickey boys watching Lightning
We are getting excited about our upcoming trip to Disney World so we whet our appetite by going to Disneyland this past Wednesday. It was a good day for it; middle of the week and not too crowded. We want to get a good value for our annual passes before Caleb turns 3 in January and needs a pass or ticket too. We left home right after lunch and the boys took a little nap in the car on the way. Of course Daddy couldn’t go in the middle of the week, but Mommy, Micah, & Caleb had a lot of fun.

I was surprised how into the characters they were and that it was Caleb even more than Micah who wanted to meet as many of them as we could. I know sometimes young kids are scared of the characters because they are so big or whatever. There were a bunch of them out just inside the front entrance and the train station. We first saw Goofy and they wanted to stop and look at him for a minute. I asked if they wanted to get in line to meet him and take a picture but Micah said no. Then we saw Mickey and I asked again and Micah said no. Caleb didn’t answer. Then I think Caleb said let’s go find some more, so we looked across the way and saw Pluto. We went over and I asked again about getting in line to meet him and MIcah said no but Caleb said yes. So we got in line (there were only 2 or 3 families ahead of us) and Caleb went up to Pluto and I took a picture. Then Micah decided he wanted to meet Pluto too so he went up and shook his paw and took a photo. Next we met Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, and Chip and Dale and they both went together and took pictures with each of them. (Last time we had been to Disneyland we saw a few characters from a distance but the lines were too long for us to want to wait to take pictures with them. Caleb was really upset when we passed by Tigger without going to meet him.) A little later in ToonTown we saw Goofy walking around, met Mickey in his house, and met Minnie again (in a different dress). This time only Caleb took a picture with Minnie; Micah didn’t want to.

They had lots of fun playing in ToonTown at Goofy’s and Mickey’s and Minnie’s houses and “driving” the cartoon cars. Then we went to the Tiki Room, which they loved. It was so cute how they danced along with the music and even sang along a little. I thought it was funny how, when talking about it later, Micah referred to it as the “Tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room” like they sing in the song. They wanted to go do it again, but I said maybe next trip. I like the Tiki Room fine, but I wanted to get over to the Pixar Play Parade in California Adventure because I knew they would love that.

They did. Lightning McQueen led the parade and they were excited to see him in real life and so big! They kept asking if there were any more cars; I’m sure they would love a parade of all the Cars characters life-size. But they did like the rest of the parade too. They have seen most of the Pixar movies except the Incredibles and Monsters Inc. I think. But they know the Monster’s Inc. characters (Mike and Sully) from the end of the Cars movie. So they liked seeing Lightning, Sully, Mike, Remy, Nemo, Marlin, Dory, Crush, Heimlich, Flik, Princess Atta, Dot, Walking Stick (I can’t recall if he has a name; is it Slim?), Mr. Potato Head, Hamm, Woody, Buzz (I didn’t see Buzz but Micah said he was on top of the float), Rex, Slinky Dog, and Mater. Mater brought up the rear of the parade. They loved it, except for the music from the floats was a little too loud so they would cover their ears, especially Micah. And the “Play” part of the parade included squirting water at spectators from some of the floats which I don’t think Micah liked too much, but he didn’t really complain because he was too into looking at everything. CA Adventure was almost closing by the time the parade was done, but we went over to Flik’s Fun Fair for a few minutes and managed to squeeze in a ride on Tuck ‘N’ Roll’s Bumper Cars. Once we went out we took a few pictures with the giant letters that spell California. I wanted to get Caleb on the C for his name. Of course there’s no M for Micah but they both had fun posing on several letters.

Then we went back into Disneyland and did a few Fantasyland rides before heading home. We rode Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, which Micah thought was too loud and they both said afterwards was a little scary. Although when we fist stepped off it they said it was fun. Then we did Dumbo for Caleb because that was his favorite ride from our last trip. Then we rode Casey Jr. in the Monkey cage car. This was their new favorite ride from this trip. Finally we took a spin on the Carousel before heading out to home. We were following the last parade out so it was pretty crowded and took longer to get out and home than I had planned so it was a long day for the boys. Still, they were too excited to fall asleep in the car even though it was their normal bedtime by the time we were in the car leaving. We talked about Disneyland all the way home and told Daddy about some of it when we got home. I know they were tired because even Micah said he was and wanted to go right to bed without even reading a book and he’s the one that always fights going to sleep and tries to stall bedtime.

So we had a great time and now we are even more excited to go to Disney World. We’re leaving in only 8 more days! We’re praying for no hurricanes!

Limes!

September 3rd, 2008

making limeade
You may know that we have a lime tree in our backyard. I pretty much never bought or cooked with limes before we moved here. But since we had the tree I figured I should try to use at least some of the limes. So I found an easy recipe for lime pie, which I have made at least one almost every year since we’ve lived here. I have also used them for guacamole, salsa, pan fried chicken, flavored water, and limeade. They’re also good for grinding in the garbage disposal to make the kitchen smell nice and fresh. Micah & Caleb like to just eat wedges of lime straight. They also love limeade. This picture shows Micah using the juicer to squeeze the limes so we could make our first batch of limeade this year. The limes start ripening around August and we start bringing bagfuls to church or anywhere to share with anyone who can use some. We know Aunt Vanessa loves limes and try to make sure she gets some every year, even if we have to ship them to Belgium! The boys and I picked another big bagful yesterday so we’ll be making more limeade and pie and bringing fresh limes anywhere we go to share with friends. Here’s our recipe for
Limeade:
1/2 cup lime juice (about 10 limes)
3 cups cold water
3/4 cup sugar
Stir all ingredients together in a pitcher until the sugar dissolves. Garnish with lime slices if desired. Serve over ice.

Kidspace Museum

August 23rd, 2008

Micah giving Caleb a ride Our friend found out about the Kidspace museum in Pasadena and asked us if we’d be interested in checking it out with them this summer. We went on August 12 and had a great time. I don’t think we saw half of the stuff there so we will probably go back sometime. Everything was hands-on. The kids could climb, explore, create, ride, and play. Micah and Caleb pretended to drive a jeep, felt and saw the effects of a small earthquake, climbed like a bug up a tree, saw lots of bugs in terrariums, watched the bees in a hive, painted with watercolors, and more. Then we went outside and rode tricycles and scooters for a while. Then we found some water play areas outside. Next time we will know to be prepared with water shoes, towels, and a change of clothes. There was a fun thing where kids could play drums by squirting water at them. The last thing we did was splash around in a shallow pool with a waterfall that rained down every so often. They got pretty wet; good thing we always keep extra clothes in the car. We had our picnic lunch, changed clothes, and then went home to take naps. It was a fun day.

Ventura County Fair

August 23rd, 2008

boys petting goat kid We went to the Ventura County Fair August 6. Micah says his favorite thing was getting to pet the baby goat and watching the model trains. Caleb thought it was pretty funny to hear the pigs making noise. We saw lots of kinds of farm animals, looked at the collections of different things that people had submitted, and ate corn dogs for lunch and soft serve ice cream for dessert. It was so cute to see Caleb pulling Micah in our wagon; we were amazed he was strong enough to do it. It was an exciting morning and both boys fell asleep in the car on the way home.

4th of July

July 17th, 2008

boys by star door
We had a great 4th of July. We had kind of an open house and invited what seemed like everyone we know ho lives within a reasonable distance to stop by. Quite a few did; we had a full house and it was great fun. We had Rockband and Wii Sports set up for people to play. The kids played in the backyard and garage and did some crafts. We had all-American burgers and hot dogs for dinner and the kids decorated star-shaped sugar cookies for dessert. It went really fast and before long it was getting dark outside and close to fireworks time. We brought all the chairs out to the front lawn, passed out glow sticks and bracelets to the kids, and settled in for the fireworks show at the park. The fireworks show was awesome and we had a perfect view from our front yard. It was great. Micah still is afraid of the loud booms and bangs of the fireworks so he watched from our office window with Cisco and Daddy. Not as great a view but still decent. Right after the fireworks pretty much everyone headed home and to bed pretty quick including us. It was a fun day.

Disneyland!

July 17th, 2008

boys in stroller with Mickey Ears
Here are Micah and Caleb with their new Mickey Ears at Disneyland. It was Caleb’s very first Disneyland visit and the first that Micah remembers. Micah has actually been there three times before, but he was only about 7 months, 15 months, and 16 months old on those trips so he doesn’t remember. We decided to get annual passes so that we could get our money’s worth over several visits.
The boys, especially Micah, wanted to go on Autopia (the car ride) first, so once we got our annual passes processed we headed toward Tomorrowland. We saw Jasmine, Pinocchio, Cruella DeVille, and Buzz Lightyear greeting guests along the way. I had thought the boys would be excited to get to “drive” the cars themselves, and Caleb was but at the last minute Micah didn’t want to drive. So Caleb drove with Mommy and Daddy drove with Micah. Caleb didn’t like the way the car jerked back on track when he didn’t steer well so Mommy ended up helping him steer too. After everything, Micah said Autopia was his favorite ride. Next we wanted to try the Nemo submarines but the line was over an hour long so we ditched that idea. Instead we headed over to Fantasyland for a while. We went on Peter Pan’s Flight which they both really liked. Then we had to take pictures of each of them trying to lift the Sword in the Stone. Next we went on Dumbo which Caleb was really excited about because his favorite zoo animals are elephants. In the end, he said Dumbo was his favorite ride. Then we rode the Carousel which left them both with big smiles. By then we were starting to think about lunch plans so we decided to walk over to Critter Country to go on the Winnie the Pooh ride and eat lunch at the Hungry Bear Restaurant. Micah & Caleb liked the Pooh ride and were excited to see Tigger greeting guests near the ride exit. Caleb wanted to go talk to Tigger, but we didn’t want to wait in line for that, so we headed over to lunch. We watched the Columbia and Mark Twain float by a couple times while we ate. Micah did not like the Columbia’s cannons (too loud) and tried to rush to be done so we could go before it came by again. After lunch we went on the Jungle Cruise, which was good except for Micah didn’t like the “gunshots”. I think the boys thought the animals were real. We stopped at the Dole stand by the Tiki Room for some pineapple whip. Then we walked through the Castle into Fantasyland again. Our last ride was the Storybook Boats. Both boys liked that one a lot too. We stopped at a souvenir stand for some personalized Mickey Ears (gotta have those!), then shared a couple of Mickey-shaped ice cream sandwiches before heading out and home. They were both beat and fall asleep in the car pretty quick. It was a fun day. Can’t wait to go again!

Blueberries!

June 24th, 2008

Mom & boys with blueberries
Last Wednesday we went to Underwood Family Farms in Somis to pick our own blueberries with some of our MOPs friends. Grandma Holly & Grandpa Don were visiting for the day and came with us too which was fun. None of us had ever picked blueberries before. It was easy and fun, although it was extremely hot that day. But we just grabbed a couple of containers and started down the rows of blueberry bushes picking the biggest bluest/purplest berries we could find. Caleb loved eating them right off the bushes, although he couldn’t have too many because we had to pay by the pound at the end. Micah really got into searching and picking; he ended up picking about a cup of them by himself. Mom picked maybe about 3 cups. I don’t remember what the weight was of all our blueberries together. We spent about an hour, maybe a bit less, picking I think.
Then we went back to the market at the front and paid and also bought some strawberries. On the way back up to the market we noticed they had beehives down one of the rows between blueberry bushes. That was interesting to see. Micah stopped and watched the bees (from a distance, of course) for a couple minutes. The lady in the market said their bees are just for cross-pollinating their plants; they don’t make honey. Although they did sell honey in the market. We also bought some honey candy to try for dessert after lunch and it was quite good.
We also enjoyed looking at and feeding the animals there. They had pygmy goats, alpacas, sheep, miniature horses, and chickens. The pygmy goats are fun to watch because they climb up on their shelter and walk around across beams way up in the air. We brought a picnic lunch and ate there before heading home for naptime. It was a really fun experience.
I had hoped picking the berries ourselves would make the boys more likely to eat them, but not so much. Caleb will only eat a couple of the biggest ones at a time. Micah won’t really eat any fresh ones, but he did like eating frozen ones. One of our MOPs friends recommended frozen blueberries as a good snack. Like tiny ice pops. I made some blueberry muffins but the boys didn’t like those either. That’s OK, Mom & Dad did. Today I made blueberry smoothie and Caleb drank quite a bit of that. He called it purple juice. Micah wouldn’t even taste it. There’s still a handful in the freezer. I just used the last of the fresh ones to make pudding popsicles. We’ll see tomorrow how those turn out.
Overall I thought the blueberry picking was a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend it to others and we will do it again.

Father’s Day

June 24th, 2008

ready for church Father's Day
Here are Dad & his boys all dressed for church. I thought Father’s Day was a good occasion to dress the boys up a little extra fancy. I got that cute suit for Caleb at the last clothing swap at church and wanted him to wear it at least once before it gets too hot and he outgrows it. I don’t know if it will still fit him come fall so this was it. Micah’s suit was from a year ago Easter and the sleeves of the shirt really are too short, but he didn’t complain. He really liked the tie, but giggled and squirmed like crazy when I was putting it on and straightening it because he said I was tickling his neck. Caleb didn’t like his tie so I didn’t make him wear it, although he did agree to let me take one picture with it before we took it off.
Our Father’s Day was pretty relaxed. We went to church, picked up lunch on the way home, ate and put the boys down for naps. After naps I set up an ice cream guessing game like I had read about in a magazine since Daddy loves ice cream. I had bought 4 different flavors of ice cream and covered the containers. I served up a small scoop of each flavor to each family member and we all enjoyed tasting each one. Then the guys had to guess what the flavors were. Sam pretty much got them all. Micah got two right I think and Caleb one or two. The flavors were Butter Pecan Praline, Extreme Moose Tracks, Strawberries and Cream, and Peanut Butter Passion. Daddy said his favorite was the Butter Pecan Praline. The rest of us liked Extreme Moose Tracks (chocolate) the best.
Later we all took a walk to the park and played for a while. Then we came home and had tacos (Daddy’s request) for dinner.
